Oscar Aurelio Ignacia

Who is Oscar?

Allow me to introduce myself to you, loyal readers: My name in Oscar Aurelio Ignacia. Good friends sometimes refer to me as Oscar the Great, Big O, Master O or Ossie. Born in Curacao in the Dutch Antilles, I only recently turned sixty-one years old. I am a practicing astrologist and life-coach, and chess federation trainer and instructor. I co-founded Caissa, the organization that holds the ONYC - de Open Netherlands Youth Chess Championships. This tournament has grown to become the largest chess event for young players!

I am pleased to have been given the opportunity - following in the footsteps of Gail - to work as the ''resident astrologist'' at a number of coffee shops - Siberië and De Supermarkt - under the flag of 'TheCoffeeShops.com', the site that hosts my horoscope. I am a great admirer of Gail's work and I intend to continue the fruitful work of my predecessor with the promise that we will always remember her and achievement. She leaves us a legacy worthy of the greatest respect.

I will of course endeavor to create something fun and inspiring so as to continue the tradition. As a teenager I had to learn a trade and I became a salesman at an exclusive gentlemen's outfitters. I started out as a trainee and was soon promoted to top-rank salesman. My then-employer Wulfsen & Wulfsen sent me to the Netherlands to learn about fabrics, after which I could further my career at the company in the Antilles. But things went differently than I expected as, instead of going to school, I became fascinated with the Red Light District. I decided to stick around and tried by hand at singing and deejaying at famous venues such as the Cottonclub on the Nieuwmarkt and Pondarosa in Warmoesstraat. The heavenly environment imbued my life with color.

In the Red Light District I came across my former teacher Ome (Uncle) Lux Haandigs. Some called him old Dibbes. It was quite an experience being introduced to his world: he did voluntary work, filled out tax forms and wrote love letters to order for the ladies. I would recommend a mentor and coach like Dibbes to everyone! This magician taught me about food and drink as well as the tricks of the esoteric trade. He introduced me to Heraclitus, who because of the obscurity of his teachings, was known as Skoteinos, the dark one. He believed the world was in constant change. The summed this up poignantly with his utterance "Panta Rhei.'' (''Everything flows'' and "There can be no light without darkness''). But there is more between heaven and earth than occupied this philosopher. Looking at his career, you discover that everything is connected to everything else and each individual is unique.

Yes, that Dibbes, God save his soul. He was an erudite man with a feeling for life. You always heard: ''Hey, old Dibbes, how are things?'' He would then start talking in that saucy Amsterdam slang: ''You remember who I mean, that busty lady, who was darting about in the café yesterday evening? She didn't want me at first, but - ey tralala! - a little later and she was sitting with me in the taxi. What do you think!'' It's thanks to him that I became involved in the music scene, playing with Broodje Bal and I crazy Orlandesie with Gert Jan Blom, Lucas van Meerwijk and Esther Apituley. He was a great support to me. All the while I was playing chess wherever I could but I wanted to play at a club. He recommended I start playing at Caissa and the rest is history. Caissa has since become the Netherlands' largest chess club.
